What you might not know about Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans have a long and rich history that dates back centuries. Yirgacheffe is a region located in the southern part of Ethiopia, known for its high-quality coffee beans. It is believed that coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia, making it the birthplace of coffee as we know it today.
The Yirgacheffe region has a unique climate, altitude, and soil combination that creates the perfect environment for growing high-quality coffee beans. The beans are grown at an altitude of 1,700 to 2,200 meters above sea level and are known for their distinct floral and citrus notes.
In the 1930s, the Ethiopian government established the first coffee cooperative in Yirgacheffe, which allowed small farmers to join together and sell their coffee beans collectively. This cooperative model has since spread throughout Ethiopia and has been instrumental in improving the livelihoods of small coffee farmers.
In the 1960s, Yirgacheffe coffee beans gained international recognition when they entered the first Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) tasting competition. Yirgacheffe coffee was the only African coffee to win the competition, solidifying its reputation as one of the best coffees in the world.
Today, Yirgacheffe coffee beans are still highly sought after by coffee enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. They are known for their complex and nuanced flavours and sustainable and ethical production practices. In addition, Yirgacheffe coffee is a testament to Ethiopia’s rich coffee culture and its contribution to the world of specialty coffee.
